I tend to switch between specs a lot while leveling, so I have indeed tried both desto and demo and different level ranged. Here's a more comprehensive reply, although since OP said he was new to the game, he probably lost interest in this thread a long time ago.
Both desto and demo are good for leveling, and both talents trees are badly designed for it. I'll use level 45 as the breaking point, in which Demo is much, much more awesome for dungeons - the level you get Felstorm. Unless you are blind, you should see how this ability skyrockets in usefulness one you join LFD queue. I'm not pointing out the obvious talents to take, for obvious reason them being obvious.
Tier 1: Shadow and Flame : Somewhat useful, but you should try how many mobs actually live long enough for you to cast Shadowbolt. Maybe bosses. Still, with totally useless tier 2, you'll take this anyway. Between Immolate, Conflagrate and Shadowburn you'll find little time for mind-numbingly slow Shadow Bolts. Tier 2: You have to put 2 points in either Improved Soul Fire useless till lvl54 , Emberstorm even more useless, till 54 and 64 respectively or Improved Searing Pain again, even MORE useless than last one, as of increased threat component.
Tier 3: You either take 2 more useless tier 2 talents, or Aftermath. If you've ever run a dungeon, you'd know what a liability are random stuns and roots. They may save a group, more often they'll wipe one, if it procs in some unfortunate moment. Great talent for soloing, use at your own risk in dungeons. Recap - you either spend 4 wasted talent points, or waste only 2 and become a minor liability to the group. Also, you spend 3 on a spell you'll not be using that much.
Tier 4 is good both for desto and demo, though more so for Demo. Hand of Gul'Dan hits as hard as Conflagrate, while having similar cooldown, and bonus effect. You should really try to see things from all points of view, instead of mindlessly repeating "Hellfire's bad cause of melee range", "puts too much drain on the healer", "if the tank's bad you'll off him", etc.
Warlocks have enough tools to sufficiently manage their own health alone, if used properly. If positioned correctly Hellfire's not a liability, also its self-damage is laughable. If the tank's bad, of course I'll pull off him. That's why he's bad. But as demo I have the means to survive it, as opposed to as Desto.
Desto focuses on single-target nukes and pulls off faster that Demo, which does sick damage but spreads it upon all pulled mobs. If you wanna have fun, play whatever YOU find fun. I like both desto and demo. I have been reading that demonology is stronger then destruction. Is demonology stronger for solo things and in dungeons?
Demo is a little bit faster-paced, even though it has a bit more of a ramp-up to it. It has more instant-casts and fewer long-cast time spells, AoE is a bit wonky with Implosion but it has a lot of passive damage just from the felguard.
In Raids it is perfectly fine, even if it is weird having to delay Dark soul for the 3rd minute mark for the second round of CDs. Well thanks for the help. I guess I have to do more research into demo vs destro and then just try it myself. Ok thanks very much. I like to solo and be able to do world quests.
As perhaps the least mobile class in all of WoW , any boost Warlocks can get to their movement options is an ideal choice. Cataclysm manages to check both boxes when it comes to AoE and single-target throughput. In fact, Cataclysm is the only talent in this row with a real use in single-target situations. Level Mortal Coil — Mortal Coil is a straightforward selection since it gives Warlocks a pseudo interrupt in addition to a percent heal.
Level Roaring Blaze — Roaring Blaze is going to be the best option at your disposal here, considering its strong potency in single-target and AoE situations.
While it might not pack the same multi-target punch that Reign of Chaos does, it amps the damage that most of your core abilities will deal for eight seconds. Boosting the effectiveness of Conflagrate, Immolate, and Incinerate is monstrously important in any situation—and for that reason, Roaring Blaze should be your go-to choice at level Level Channel Demonfire — While all three level 50 talents are going to be seriously strong options, Channel Demonfire is a strong hybrid ability that can devastate targets in both AoE and single-target scenarios.
The most ideal covenant that Destruction Warlocks can join is Night Fae. Between an extremely versatile core ability, another added piece of utility, and strong Soulbinds for added measure, Night Fae is a no-brainer for Destruction Warlocks.
